Director Ryan Coogler and actor Michael B. Jordan scored a huge shot this year with SinnerBut they have been successful since the first movie they made together, 2014’s FRUITVALE STATION. The autobiographical drama chronicles the final day of Oscar Grant III, an Oakland resident who was shot and killed by police on January 1, 2009. The film begins with Oscar fighting with his girlfriend and then follows him as he applies for a job, attends a birthday party and then becomes part of a battle on a leading Bart train.
What makes FRUITVALE STATION How effective it is how simple, simple and unintentional it is. By placing the audience in Oscar shoes for a day, Coogler is eschews sensationalism for naturalism and allows viewers to engage in Oscar’s everyday problems. That’s what makes his death much more shocking – and tragically.
