For a more recent look at Wilson later in his life, check out this 2021 documentary. Rolled stone editor Jason Fine Interviewing Wilson in the film, showcasing their long -standing relationship. The duo drives through Los Angeles together, reminiscing as Wilson offers rare insights into his life and music.
It is clear that Wilson and Fine have a valid friendship, making the conversation flow easier and put a perspective on Wilson who are not often seen. (One critic Wilson was referred to as a “famous interview of poor,” noting that he does not like to answer questions about his past.) ‘Brian Wilson: I was not done for these times’ (1995)

This 1995 biopic chronicles the musician’s progress to fame, early years of the Beach Boys and Wilson’s battles with addiction and recovery. Director Don was said the movie “Attempts to explain (…) exactly why the phrase ‘Brian Wilson is a genius’ has appeared on the lips of three generations of musicians as a holy gospel,” and manages to give the viewer some insight of how he crafts his tunes and complex harmonies, using the studio itself as a tool.
It is a close portrait of a supplementary and complex man who created, as was, “an unprecedented and advanced attitude radically of rock.”

‘Love & Mercy’ (2014)

For a more dramatic version of Wilson’s story, we recommend you watch Love and mercy. This biopic depicts Wilson in two periods of his life – the 1960s and 1980s. The musician’s younger and older versions are portrayed by Paul under him and John Cusackrespectively, and both actors do a commendable work of portraying the artist’s battles with mental illness and addiction. The film also explores Wilson’s creative victories throughout the decades and his relationships with a controversial therapist Eugene Landy (Paul Jamatt) and his wife, Melinda Ledbetter (Elizabeth Banks).

Wilson himself called the film “very factually” in an interview with BulletMentioning that the scenes where he had a version of himself on drugs was “fun to watch.” The film presents a complex picture of the musician’s darkest days, but ultimately it is uplifting, leaving the viewer with a satisfactory sense of well -lived life.
