200-year-old condom that is displayed at the Amsterdam Museum

Almost 200 -year -old condom – in “Mint” – just at the exhibition at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

It is believed that it is made from the app sheep and has a clear print that represents a nun and three clergymen.

A rare artifact dates back to 1830 and was purchased by the museum at auction last year. The condom is part of the exhibition of prostitution and sexuality of the 19th century. Prints, images and photos are also part of the display.

Rijksmuseum curator Joyce Zelen told the BBC when she and her colleague first noticed a condom at the auction that they “laughed”.

Ms Zelen said that “no one else noticed it” and they were the only ones who were on this bet.

After receiving the subject, they inspected it with ultraviolet light and found out that it was not used.

“It’s in a mint state,” Ms Zelen said.

Because it was put to the exhibition, the museum was stuffed with people – young and old – and “the answer was strange,” she added.

Ms Zelen explained that the condom was supposed “Luxury souvenir” from the bizarre brothel in France, and that only two such items have survived to this day.

The museum said that an unusual subject “embodies both lighter and darker sides of sexual health, in the era, when the search for sensual pleasure was rich in unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases – especially Persians.”

A clear print on this particular object shows a nun sitting in front of three men with her dressing, and her legs, which show her finger at the clergy, all of them stand before her habits.

The condom also carries the “VOILĂ  Mon Choix” inscription, which means “there is my choice.”

The museum noted that, thus, the print should be considered as “a parody of celibacy, and a Paris of Paris from Greek mythology”, the last – the mythological story of the Trojan prince, nicknamed Paris, who was to decide who was the most just goddess among Aphrodite, Hera and Atnan.

The Dutch Museum notes that their printing house contains about 750,000 prints, images and photos, but this is the first example in the condom collection.

“As far as we can say, we are the only art museum with a printed condom,” said Ms. Zelen.

She said her institution was “open for loan” to other museums, but noted that the condom was very fragile.

It will be shown by the end of November.
